Daniel Z. Joseph's Backpack to Rucksack: Insight into Leadership and Resilience by Military Experts is a phenomenal read. This book on leadership and resiliency can apply in coordination with different academic military disciplines taught in military schools today. For example, force management, sustainment, leadership, history, and tactics under the umbrella of remaining calm, humble, and resilient facing extreme pressure, while simultaneously applying critical and creative thinking to ensure mission success. Backpack to Rucksack is a must read, and I really enjoyed the way each chapter consists of four outstanding sections. The first section of each chapter includes a topic introduction, followed with a good military leadership example, the third section applies a reflective mindset (psychology) to explain the why of the topic, and finally, the fourth section is full of leadership advice seasoned with wisdom.

Joseph was thoughtful in his selection of topics and real-world military experiences used in the book's introductions to begin each chapter. The detail and realism of the military stories were amazing. Each chapter took on a detailed story of its own, keeping you excited to continue reading through the book to the next section. When reading the introduction of each chapter, you will find yourself visualizing alongside the military personnel that are highlighted in the book as they tell their stories.

There are plenty of good military examples to learn form and apply lessons learned inside and outside of the military in this book. Leadership is exemplified by the examples of the soldiers who opened their hearts and minds to become vulnerable to the reader. Each good leadership example in this book can be used for positive individual self-development.

The reflective mindset of each chapter allows you to see how to enhance your situational awareness in multiple leadership and military scenarios. The psychology of reflecting and coping with different aspects of military life during war and peacetime can only enhance your resiliency skills.

The leadership advice takeaways are tremendous and add value to the reader. So many good quotes that leaders of all ranks can utilize are in this book. I was very impressed by how practical and yet profound the leadership takeaways were in each chapter.

Backpack to Rucksack is full of wisdom, leadership, and resiliency that all soldiers, whether enlisted or officers, can use to enhance their critical and creative thinking skills. I highly recommend that this book be placed on every soldier's nightstand. As a retired twenty-eight-year military veteran, Backpack to Rucksack receives my highest endorsement.
