9-11-visor

This year marks the eighteenth anniversary of the 9/11 attacks by al-Qaida extremists that killed nearly three thousand people and injured over six thousand more. The United States responded by initiating the Global War on Terrorism, the invasion of Afghanistan, and the hunt for al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden. In the photo, the burning buildings of the World Trade Center are reflected in the visor of then U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. James Haskell as he overlooks Ground Zero 11 September 2001 in Lower Manhattan, New York. Haskell was an MH-53M helicopter flight engineer assigned to the Air Force Special Operations Command as an aerial gunner. By coincidence, his aircraft was in the area participating in a training mission when the attack occurred. (Photo by Staff Sgt.
