The Battle of Horseshoe Bend occurred during the War of 1812 in what is now central Alabama. US Army forces and allied Native American Warriors attacked a force of Red Stick Creek Warriors that fortified a horseshoe-shaped bend in the Tallapoosa River. The battle effectively ended the Creek War and helped to secure the southwest United States against the British during the War of 1812.

Dr. Doug Campbell of the History Instruction Office of the Command and Tactics Directorate, MCoE, built an extensive PowerPoint packet of staff ride materials that he generously shared with the AUP. This packet contains everything an organization needs to conduct its own staff ride and study of the Creek War: a comprehensive list of sources, a stand list with detailed directions and suggested topics of discussion at each stand, a narrative on the battle, personal accounts, and other sites associated with the Creek War.

From 17-19 September 1868, the Cheyenne and Sioux achieved a costly victory against a small group of Army Scouts at the Battle of Beecher Island. It was a small fight, yet the battle significantly affected future Plains Indian warfare. The Cheyenne and their allies would rarely again attempt direct assaults against disciplined firepower. The battlefield is located approximately 16 miles south of Wray, Colorado. Major James K. Earls III, US Army (Retired) developed the staff ride for the 4th Infantry Museum.

Battle of the Bridges, Kuwait (1990) Staff Ride Materials

The Battle of the Bridges occurred in August 1990 when Iraq invaded Kuwait, taking place just west of the town of Jahra. CW3 Benjamin Lewis shared the products that his unit used to conduct this one-day staff ride while deployed.

The Battle of Big Dry Wash Staff Ride Materials

The Battle of the Big Dry Wash was the last major battle between the US Army and Apache warriors in Arizona. The battlefield is located approximately two hours south of Winslow in the Coconino National Forest. Mr. Nathan Hoepner, a contract instructor with Northern Arizona University’s Army ROTC program, sent us extensive files from the Lumberjack Battalion’s staff ride.
